RIP Jean Simmons

Jean Simmons died this weekend, at the age of 80, of lung cancer.

Ms. Simmons was one of the great iconic actresses, up there with the likes of Katharine Hepburn. Her career spans back to 1944, and includes such legendary movies as Desirée (playing the title role, alongside Marlon Brando’s Napoleon), Guys and Dolls (again alongside Brando), Elmer Gantry (alongside Burt Lancaster) and Spartacus (alongside Kirk Douglas; one of my all-time favorite movies).

Her TV work is at least equally notable, and it’s possible she might be even better known for her roles in The Thorn Birds (for which she received an Emmy) and North & South, among many others. She was nominated twice for an Oscar, once 1948 for her role in Hamlet, and once again 1969 for her role in Happy Ending.

She was still active in her art by last year.

One of those Great Ladies whose death is a major loss.
