RIP Robert B. Parker

I have just learned that Robert B. Parker died at the age of 77. He died at his desk. For a writer, especially one of Mr. Parker’s caliber, I suppose that’s like dying with his boots on was for a gunfighter.

I was originally introduced to his work through the TV series that was based on his hardboiled PI Spenser. It took me some time after that to get around to actually reading his novels, but I enjoyed them immensely. Parker’s work was everything I still hope to achieve in my own: it was exciting, witty, and most of all fun. His characters (Spenser, Hawk, Susan Silverman, Jesse Stone and Sunny Randall) were all very well fleshed out and realized. Work like the western novel Appaloosa proved that his talents were not confined to the mystery and thriller genres. Whatever genre he tackled, he excelled at it.

Mr. Parker will be sorely missed not only by his family and friends, but by everyone who enjoyed mystery novels.

Now excuse me, I need to go curl up with a Jesse Stone novel (my favorite of his creations).
